Federal Minister for Water Mark Butler states the $80 million Koondrook-Perricoota Forest Flood Enhancement Project “is the largest major work to be completed under The Living Murray Environmental Works and Measures Program”.
AWMA were engaged by Fulton Hogan for the design, manufacture and installation of approximately 30 water control structures across six State Water sites for the Koondrook-Perricoota Forest Flood Enhancement Project. Engineering structures and channels will be installed to divert and control flows from the Murray River through the forest, in order to mimic natural flooding events and improve and protect forest health. The key objective to create a diversion channel with associated control structures enables the natural flow of water through the forest from the Torrumbarry Weir pool.
AWMA worked closely with all parties to ensure sustainable solutions were custom designed for each site.
AWMA’s proven designs satisfied detailed specifications in regards to sealing, access, clear water, operation, OH&S, flooding, vandalism and maintenance.
The water control products supplied for this project include some of Australia’s largest LayFlat gates,Undershot Penstocks, Topsealing Penstocks, Flap Gates, Combination Gates and a dual decant weir gate. The sites will be controlled via a range of portable and permanent electric, hydraulic and manual actuation systems. Additional works include a mechanical lift segmented stopboard (bulkhead) that may be engaged under flow conditions to isolate the LayFlat tilting gates. The structure provides isolation of approximately 4m x 4m. All three segments and associated lifting frame are contained within a custom designed storage rack located on-site.
The project along with the Gunbower Forest project on the Victorian side of the Murray River will help ensure the Gunbower-Koondrook-Perricoota Forest remains a vital part of the region for both the community and the native flora and fauna that depend on it.
