Sustainable Solutions for Desalination

15 years ago, AWMA was proud to play a key role in the construction of the Sydney Desalination Plant at Kurnell, Australia’s largest water infrastructure project at the time.

AWMA designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned over 72 custom-engineered water control gates, including penstocks, bulkheads, and stopboards, some up to 4m x 4m in size. Constructed from Super Duplex Stainless Steel and hydrostatically tested to over 200 tonnes, these assets were engineered to perform in demanding coastal environments, ensuring reliability and a 100-year design life.

Through advanced Australian manufacturing and testing capabilities, AWMA delivered solutions that met the project’s stringent specification; supporting Sydney Water’s goal of a consistent, sustainable, drought-resilient water supply for the city.

Today, the Sydney Desalination Plant supplies up to 250 million litres of drinking water per day, contributing up to 15% of Sydney’s water needs and providing vital resilience in times of drought or emergency.

We’re proud to see our contribution featured in Better Homes and Gardens’ recent segment, produced with the Australian Water Association and Sydney Water, highlighting how innovation and engineering continue to shape Australia’s water future.
