Goulburn-Murray Water Gunbower Weir

Goulburn-Murray Water (G-MW) engaged AWMA to assist with a temporary fix at the Gunbower Weir a number of years ago followed by the entire redevelopment of the Weir and addition of a Fishway.

The new Gunbower Weir required an automated water control structure capable of regulating water levels and accurately measuring flows of up to 2000ML/day.

AWMA LayFlat Gates were selected to fulfil the specifications of the new control structure as the overshot gate design met the requirement for minimum freeboard under no-flow conditions. All four gates were manufactured from marine grade aluminium and driven by Rotork actuators.

The gate specifications required a watertight seal to withstand the full hydrostatic load with no deformation when under full head pressure from the upstream side of the structure. Each gate has an average clear waterway of 2000mm and an operating level of 2080mm. AWMA were capable of fulfilling the design, manufacture and installation specifications for this project in-house to accredited quality and OH&S standards.

The Gunbower Creek in northern Victoria is a critical natural carrier in the Torrumbarry Irrigation Area, however the weir posed a barrier to natural fish migration. G-MW included the installation of an AWMA ULF undershot penstock to form a fish ladder for this project to promote the movement of fish between feeding and breeding grounds along the creek.

Thousands of LayFlat Gates have now been installed within irrigation systems, environmental sites  and more recently, sewage treatment plants.
