Barwon Water experienced difficulty sourcing Inlet Screens for their new water storage facility in Colac, south-west Victoria. Due to time restrictions, Barwon Water sought an alternative product to the specified stainless steel inlet screens. The outlet tower within the No. 5 Basin required three Inlet Screens, which act as a coarse filter to prevent debris from entering the treatment plant. Within a few weeks, conversation with Barwon Water’s design consultant resulted in the installation of three new AWMA Poly Inlet Screens, designed for ease of cleaning, efficiency and affordability.
The AWMA Inlet Screen includes aluminium framework, a manual winch and plastic guides, allowing the screens to be raised to the water surface and lifted 90 degrees for ease of maintenance. The Inlet Screens are manufactured from polyethylene and designed with tapered holes to eliminate blockages.
Colac No. 5 Basin has the capacity to hold 450ML of raw water piped from Barwon Waters’ catchment dams in the Otway Ranges. Stored water is filtered through the basin’s outlet tower inlet screens before being transferred to the adjoining treatment plant, which provides the local drinking water supply. MWH undertook the design and Max Bright & Sons constructed the basin.
