State Water’s Marebone Fishway

State Water Corporation engaged AWMA to design, manufacture and install a regulator and fishway gates for a new fish management structure at Marebone Weir, 50km north of Warren.

A ‘2-in-1’ LayFlat Gate provided two clear flow areas of 3m x 2.5m, complete with actuation system and walkway. The LayFlat will form the Marebone Regulator, to be operated via State Water’s SCADA system.

Two large stainless steel sidewinders were supplied 3m x 2.4m and 3.5m x 3.1m. The sidewinders utilise hydraulic actuators with waterproof cylinders to be submerged within the fishway structure and operated from a control cabinet located on an elevated platform. AWMA were responsible for all gates and actuation systems, the hydraulic control cabinet as well as manual and automated control options for the staged program.

The next stage of this project will require the installation of two 3m bulkheads with manual lifting points.

All designs for the gates and associated control systems were required to accommodate the possible flood conditions.

The new fishway is a vertical slot system which best meets economic and ecological requirements and provides demonstrated long-term benefits to maintain and improve biodiversity through enhancing the movement of native fish in and out of major wetland areas. State Water Corporation worked with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water and Industry and Investment NSW on the fishway project as part of the Rivers Environmental Restoration Program (RERP).

The RERP is jointly funded by the NSW Government and the Australian Government’s Water for the Future – Water Smart Australia Program and aims to arrest the decline of wetlands through water recovery, effective management of environmental water and the sustainable management of our wetlands.
